MORBID ANGEL's STEVE TUCKER Remembers PANTERA's DIMEBAG: 'He Was A Great Dude'
December 27, 2017MORBID ANGEL frontman Steve Tucker was interviewed on the December 8 edition of "The Chainsaw Symphony" show, which airs on the 91.3 FM WTSR radio station. You can now listen to the chat using the SoundCloud widget below.
Asked if he got to know "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott when MORBID ANGEL toured the U.S. in 2001 as the support act for PANTERA, Tucker said: "I absolutely got to know Dime. He was a great dude. I mean, actually, all the fucking crazy stories you hear about the guy, most of 'em are true. Unless you hear somebody saying he did something really bad, then said 'fuck off.' Because he would do funny, crazy shit, and somebody might be the butt of a joke, but in the end, dude, he would take care of 'em completely. He always set shit straight, man. He was one of the coolest guys I've ever met, to be honest with you — not like anyone else I've ever met on this planet."
Tucker added that the PANTERA tour "was fantastic. It was just phenomenal, man; it was great," he said. "We got to do something that was… I don't think anybody ever thought a death metal band would do — we got to play arenas every single night, and it was awesome."
According to Steve, PANTERA was "badass every night" during the 2001 tour, which ended up being the band's final run of shows. "I have to pat them guys fully on the back and say, 'Holy shit!' They were perfect every night."
Despite PANTERA's well-deserved reputation for over-the-top offstage road antics, Tucker said that the only time he really partied with them "was if we had an off day, and, honestly, even then, I woke up regretting it. But it was a blast," he said. "You never kind of knew what was going on with them. They always had cameras rolling, and everything was… It was just a blast, man. It was fun. Those guys were kind of living the dream, man — it was pretty fantastic."
Dimebag was shot and killed by a crazed gunman while performing with DAMAGEPLAN at a Columbus, Ohio rock club in December 2004.
MORBID ANGEL's new album, "Kingdoms Disdained", was released December 1 via Silver Lining Music in the U.S. and JVC in Japan.
